THE ALLEGHANY HIGHLANDS FREE CLINIC: NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS
Making health care available regardless of an ability
to pay isn’t
a new idea in the Alleghany Highlands. Local physicians
and health care providers have always done their
share to
help those in need.
The establishment of the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic
has simply made access to care easier for the
physician and the patient.
With the support of the community, staff at the free
clinic coordinate
efforts to see that a wide range of health care
services is accessible to low-income,
uninsured people.
In 2001
the Free Clinic coordinated health care for 438 people.
Services
to these patients included:
·
773 Primary Care Visits
·
480 visits to specialized physicians
·
39 surgeries
·
Diagnostic and hospital based services valued at
$341,448
·
Assistance in obtaining 7,728 prescription
medications
at little or no cost to the patient
VOLUNTEERS ARE KEY TO SUCCESS
Clinical, professional and lay volunteers lend time
and talent in every area of operations from
providing care to data entry and fundraising.
In 2001, 170 volunteers provided over 3,036
hours of service. Volunteers included:
·
54 Physicians
·
3 Nurse Practitioners
·
34 Physician Assistants/Students
·
20 Nurses
·
59 Administrative Volunteers

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
~The Physician Assistant Foundation granted funds
for a collaboration between the College of Health
Sciences Physician Assistant Program and the
Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic to provide free
cervical and
colorectal cancer screening to the public.
~Trigon Blue Cross/Blue
Shield and the Alleghany Foundation funded a pilot project for diabetics
designed to help patients obtain the supplies
and support physicians
recommend to help them maintain good health and feel their best.
~The Virginia Health Care
Foundation granted funds to staff the free clinic with a Nurse Practitioner or
Physician Assistant beginning October 2002. This will allow the free clinic to
expand services by making more primary care appointments available.
The pilot Diabetic Project “offers
diabetics all the tools and support
they need to actively manage their
diabetes and reduce the risk of
serious complications like renal
failure, blindness and heart disease.
As a physician it is a relief to know
that the resources are available
for these patients.”
