“The Free Clinic is

probably one of the

best, most efficient

ways of providing

health care to our

working poor, to

those who are trying

the best they can,

who are working hard

every day, but still

are unable to afford

quality health care.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORS

Since opening in 1998 it has been our privilege to work side by side with hundreds of volunteers dedicated to making health care accessible to the Alleghany Highland’s uninsured families and individuals.   Supported by foundations, health care providers and individual contributions, this community has succeeded in establishing a compassionate and cost-effective way to deliver health care to some of our most vulnerable citizens - those whose income is too high to qualify for public programs such as Medicaid, but yet is not enough to afford health insurance.

It is a pleasure to share the 2001 Annual Report for the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic with you.  It is designed to provide a brief overview of free clinic operations, a financial report and program highlights. In illustrating the outstanding commitments to making health care accessible, we believe it provides something even greater than the facts and figures - a snap shot of the Alleghany Highlands community at its very best.

THE ALLEGHANY HIGHLANDS FREE CLINIC: NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS

MEETING OUR MISSION

Making health care available regardless of an ability to pay isn’t

a new idea in the Alleghany Highlands.  Local physicians

and health care providers have always done their share to

help those in need.  The establishment of the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic

has simply made access to care easier for the physician and the patient.

With the support of the community, staff at the free clinic coordinate

efforts to see that a wide range of health care services is accessible to low-income,

uninsured people.

In 2001 the Free Clinic coordinated health care for 438 people.

Services to these patients included:

·        773 Primary Care Visits

·        480 visits to specialized physicians

·        39 surgeries

·        Diagnostic and hospital based services valued at $341,448

·        Assistance in obtaining 7,728 prescription medications

at little or no cost to the patient

VOLUNTEERS ARE KEY TO SUCCESS

Clinical, professional and lay volunteers lend time

and talent in every area of operations from

providing care to data entry and fundraising.

In 2001, 170 volunteers provided over 3,036 hours of service. Volunteers included:

·        54 Physicians

·        3 Nurse Practitioners

·        34 Physician Assistants/Students

·        20 Nurses

·        59 Administrative Volunteers

“I have worked hard for years

and now because of health

problems I have no health

insurance and no income…

This clinic has been a God

Send to me, not only financially,

but also with the caring of such

a wonderful staff…I hope someday

to be able to make a contribution

myself to help someone else.”

~ Patient

2001 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

~The Physician Assistant Foundation granted funds

for a collaboration between the College of Health

Sciences Physician Assistant Program and the

Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic to provide free cervical and

colorectal cancer screening to the public.

~Trigon Blue Cross/Blue Shield and the Alleghany Foundation funded a pilot project for diabetics designed to help patients obtain the supplies

and support physicians recommend to help them maintain good health and feel their best.

~The Virginia Health Care Foundation granted funds to staff the free clinic with a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant beginning October 2002. This will allow the free clinic to expand services by making more primary care appointments available.

The pilot Diabetic Project “offers

diabetics all the tools and support

they need to actively manage their

diabetes and reduce the risk of

serious complications like renal

failure, blindness and heart disease.

As a physician it is a relief to know

that the resources are available

for these patients.”

Hassan Honainy, MD

“We knew there were

people out there who

were missing out on

much needed medical

attention because of

their financial situations.

It is rewarding to know

that you are making a

difference.”

Michael Lassere, MD

“The Free Clinic has

helped so much.  Not

having any insurance

would have really hurt

my husband and I…

I…hope it will keep

going a long time.”

~Patient

“I would like to thank everyone at the Free Clinic because without it hard working people, single mothers, and low-income families would not be able to receive medical care.  Even low-income households need medical care.”
~ Patient

“The Free Clinic means the world to me.  I have gotten excellent care.  The doctors and the staff are wonderful.”                   ~Patient
