Where Are Ron and Ellen?
Arequipa, Peru, November 2008
Arequipa's Cathedral at night. It is the only cathedral in Peru that stretches the full length of the Plaza de Armas
Arequipa is called the White City because so many of its older buildings are constructed from sillar, an off-white volcanic rock

Phone call vendor. There are two cell phone companies, Claro and Movistar, and it is impossible to make or receive calls between them. Many people therefore have two cell phones. There are also phone call vendors on the street (all with the distinctive green vests). They each carry two phones and are like walking phone booths. And yes, we often saw people using them.
The Thomas Jefferson Instituto de Education Superior, a university level design institute, was across the street from our hotel. Since Charlottesville, Virginia, was Thomas Jefferson's home, we were intrigued. We enjoyed their exhibit space (everything from typography designs to video and robot installations) and their modern architecture.
Classroom building at Thomas Jefferson Instituto de Education Superior. It is white and built around a courtyard, but is definitely not Spanish colonial!
