Hornet Diamond Wrapup:
2009 Season Saw Young Hornets Improve
And Prepare to Move Up to AA ranks ....

Despite a 9-12 overall record, the Wilson baseball team greatly improved as the rain-plagued spring season progressed and heading into the final games of the regular-season, sat at the top of the Shenandoah District standings.  The team ultimately finished in a three-way tie for 2nd place, but was seeded 4th in the tourney and lost its opener to Page County.
In its final 12 games of the regular season, the Hornets were involved in close, competitive games, finishing out 7-5. After suffering an embarrassing 26-0 loss to powerful Fort Defiance (WMHS's worst loss ever in baseball), the team regrouped, beat Stonewall Jackson 10-0 the next day and finished the season with a chance to win every game.
That should help boost the Hornets as they leave the Group A ranks after 25 seasons and join the AA Southern Valley District for 2010.  They will compete against the Fort, Waynesboro, Stuarts Draft, Robert E. Lee and Rockbridge County.
Senior D.J. Curry had a season to remember, as the pitcher/right fielder set a individual team record with 8 home runs, topping Matt Fisher's old mark of 7 set in 2005. Curry also batted above .500 for most of the season and racked up 35 RBIs and was chosen Shenandoah District player-of-the-year.

    *********

Wilson's home diamond was officially named "Bo Bowers Stadium" and dedicated on May 12, 2005 in honor of former coach Charles "Bo" Bowers' 30+ years of service to the WMHS baseball program, including 29 as head coach (1972-2000) when he guided the Hornet varsity to over 350 wins. He was honored by the VHSL and Va. High School Coaches Association for induction into the state High School Hall of Fame  in October 2006 taking his place among the state's elite.  He was also selected the next year for the Athletic Hall of Fame at Virginia Commonwealth University.  Now retired, coach Bowers lives in Harrisonburg.

The facility received a much-needed facelift in 2005 for the first time since 1988.  This project was spearheaded by community leaders Wendell Coleman and Jeff Moore.

During a 17-year span (1990-2006), Wilson teams had earned 270 victories and lost only 104.
Wilson Memorial remains one of only three Group A schools to have won the state baseball championship more than twice since 1970. J.J. Kelly-Wise has nine and former Region B school Goochland won its third in 2006. Under the long-time tenure of coach Bowers, the Hornets captured the titles in 1977, 1980 & 1990. They also qualified for state play in '91, '98, & '99 and again in 2002.
