HEAD COACH:
Derek McDaniel
3rd Season .. 6th overall
Coach McDaniel enters his 3rd
season as head coach after having led a young team the past two seasons. He is a former 3-sport
Hornet standout athlete who graduated in 1977 after having led the Hornets to
the state baseball championship during his senior year. He returned to his roots
at WMHS six years ago after having spent the previous 16 years as head baseball
coach at Waynesboro HS. He also spent two years (1982-83) as an assistant coach at Page
County following graduation from Marshall University in Huntington, WVa., where
McDaniel earned a baseball scholarship following his stellar prep
career. He and his wife, Tammy, have a daughter, Taryn, who is a
student at Radford Univ. and played basketball and volleyball at
Waynesboro.
Coach "Mac" also just completed his 6th season as head football coach
at WMHS, leading Wilson to only its third ever region playoff berth in 2006 and
first in 10 years. He also spent three seasons as manager of the
Valley Baseball League's Waynesboro "Generals" .
ASSISTANT COACHES:
Rodney Cullen
6th Season
Rodney Cullen is in his 6th year
coaching baseball at Wilson after having spent the 2005-07 seasons as head
coach. Coach Cullen formerly was a coach and athletic director at
Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro. Coach Cullen is a native of
Lyndhurst and played baseball & basketball at Stuarts Draft HS and graduated
from Longwood College. He teaches P.E. and Behind-the-Wheel driver's training at
Wilson and also is head varsity boys basketball coach. His oldest son,
Brooks (now a junior at Concord (WVa) University) set 5 school baseball
records as a 4-year player for the Hornets. Rodney and his wife, Ann, have
another son, Hunter, a recent WMHS grad and former hoops player, who is the
school's all-time leading scorer with over 1,000 career points.
Jim Critzer
1st Season
Coach Critzer is a volunteer assistant after having spent several years as the head coach at Waynesboro High School, having led the Giants to a pair of state tournament berths in 2008 and '07.
